My son got himself a new bike last night from Halfrauds. A Carrera Gryphon Performance 2008. He got it party because of the price, £279, and partly because they had stock. We had ordered bikes via 2 LBS weeks ago but the first ones we ordered got cancelled by LBS and the next ones both remained 'on order' so we cancelled those too and took the Halfords plunge.

Today, less than 24 hour after getting the ride, he leaves the house and forgets to stop at the end of the road hitting a moving car on the wing. Fortunately he's not hurt (a bruised cheek and ego), the cars a little scratched but the front wheel rim snapped and the forks bent!

He can't have been going more than 10mph and the car poss 15mph as the driver was just going over a sleeping policeman when the accident happened.

Anyway, that's by the by!

We now have to replace one fork and wheel, cheaply, as I can't see Halfords being threated by the 'Sales of Goods' act on their folding forks.

Any suggestions on cheap replacement parts welcome.

Aye bud, looks that way. I'll check properly when i've had some food and done some more father-laughter.

I haven't been into the shed yet, I might find something in there wheel wise, but as normal with these events we gave all the old and unsed bikes to the scrap man about a month again, we could have reclaimed a fork from their!!!

all sorted thanks Mickle,

I found I had a rusty old rigida wheel in the shed and a mate had a fork that he removed from an old bike, which is a putrid orange and green fade-over spray job.

It will learn him a lesson and I expect he'll be dipping in the piggy bank to buy himself some new 'look the part' replacements.

He's got a lovely shiner though, from the cheekbone in to the bridge of his nose with a bit of a graze. He'll no doubt be telling his mates in school of his lucky 60 mph escape!

Happy Days.
