Another summer holiday, and another cycling adventure with my son.
He is now 9, and every holiday since he started to ride his bike, we've gone on a cycling adventure, with the distances getting longer and longer, and the food stops getting bigger and bigger.
This year, back in the flat lands of Lincolnshire. Well, we say "flat lands", but staying in Leadenham, which is half-way up the ridge that runs South from Lincoln, so the last few miles will inevitably include a big climb. And long, straight, flat roads got a bad press due to the monotony, and the psychological effect of the end getting closer only very slowly.
So this year's challenge was the metric century. 2 weeks this year to build up to it, and we had some good trips. One trip started off badly, but after a cake stop where the other patrons and shop owner were amazed that we had just ridden 25 miles, my son's spirit lifted considerably, and the rest of the trip was much better.
Anyway, the big one. Early start, and headed up to Lincoln via Bardney with a cake stop on the way. Had a magnificent burger on the waterside in Lincoln. Third stop was at the Giant store at Doddington Hall, then heading south to Caythorpe, then home. Total distance was just a whisker short of 70 miles, with a big hill just a few miles from the end. Tired legs, but a happy and successful trip. Photos on the next post.
Total distance for the holiday? 200 miles.
Proud Dad? You bet!
