I am trying to decide between these two bikes. Two of my LBS have their previous year models up for sale. The 2014 Trek Madone 2.1 is for sale at $999.99 and the Cannondale Synapse is $799. The Madone has the 105 group set, but it is the 2014 version so it has the 10 speed rear derailleur. The 2015 Cannondale has the upgraded Tiagra group set, so it also has a 10 speed rear derailleur, so both bike have a 2x10 set up. The Trek has v-brakes and the Cannondale has disk brakes. The Trek has more of a traditional race geometry while the Cannondale has an endurance geometry.
My main use will be to commute a few miles a day to work, and an occasional race.
You can check the side by side at: http://road-bikes.gearsuite.com/com...-2-1-vs-2015-Cannondale-Synapse-Tiagra-Disc-6
I guess my question is, is the trek worth the extra $200?

As always the answer to the question is ride them then select the best fitting/most comfortable option.

Both look like good options.

I've got bikes with the previous gen 105 and new tiagra, if that's what you're comparing, there's not a lot in it. I might slightly prefer the new tiagra but it's not something I'd use to decide bike choice.

I'd go for the disc brakes but the ones on the Synapse aren't great, could be upgraded for less than the difference in price for both bikes I think.

If it fits you better though, the trek will be worth the extra

After riding both bikes I would agree. The new Tiagra is a little nicer than the old 105. The Trek rim brakes do work a lot better than the disk brakes on the Cannondale, but upgrading would be an option on the Cannondale.

Thank you for the thoughts!

I think a pair of trp spares would be about £120,mot sure about us prices! Should be an improvement over the standard set though. I found I had to adjust them when I got my Synapse so wouldn't even be sure the feel in the shop was right!
