A mate of mine has just picked up a very slightly used (Mint) 2011 Cube Streamer from a Pawn Shop for £320

Lucky tw@!

Lovely looking bike too!

He's the sort of bloke who fall in a bucket of sh*t and come out smelling of roses...

Why does this never happen to me?

I can only assume that there may be some thievery somewhere within this acquisition somewhere along the line. If I'd seen a bargain like that I'd be very tempted to go for it myself but would only do so after checking with local plod to see if it had been reported.

Of course I might be being over cynical, and in fact pawn shop owner was a numpty, in which case I'm of course not jealous at all and won't be popping by the local pawn shop on a weekly basis

I don't think the shop owner was a numpty. Someone came in with the bike, he assessed the resale value and loaned a small percentage of that, and added a healthy charge on top of that. When the owner fails to redeem the bike, the pawn shop sells the bike for the loan + charges making a healthy profit, and because the sale price is low the bike sells quickly. IANAL but I think the shop owner can only take his charges from the resale price, anything over that would go to the owner. The numpty is the person who pawned the bike - unless it was nicked.

I've seen some right bargains in second hand shops. Second hand shops sell anything and everything and the seller cannot be an expert on everything.

Most sellers will know quite quickly that a Trek bike is good. But will he able able to tell an entry level Trek from one fitted with Ultegra?

I've also seen BSOs with ridiculously high ticket prices because the bike brand is 'popular' i.e Emmelle or Apollo (Halfords).

It is a popular way of getting cash for stolen bikes. I once found one of my bikes on sale for £150 - I was glad that someone who knew that it had been stolen spotted it. I'd spent more than three grand on it but as I had had the frame re-sprayed it looked quite anonymous. The thief and the shop had no idea what it was worth, but any bike nerd would have realised it had a brand new wheelset and groupset and should have realised something wasn't right.

They would've bought it regardless. If threads like these teach us anything, it's that people don't care if things are too good to be true, as long as it profits them somehow.
