Ok a good few of us bought the said bike.Mine April 2010,question is should i be surprised that many of the teeth are worn on the cassette and i have been informed by lbs,who i trust, that i need to spend some money( argh a true Yorkshireman, crying) on a cassette and chain.
Is 21/2 years a fair life span of said parts.
Reason for asking her indoors is not happy about the cost. i am 62 years old and getting earache.

Depends to some extent how many miles you have done!

If you change the chain before it is too worn, then you don't need to change the cassette. If you neglect it then you will have to change the cassette as well. Is it a 9 speed Tiagra one? If so you'll get cassette and chain for about £40.

My Allez Elite is from October 2010, and I am on about the 5th chain, though I've just changed the cassette for the first time. I get about 1500-1800 miles from a chain, but I did snap one at less miles than that.

I tend to do my chain and cassette every year I just ordered and 105 cassette and KMC X10L chain with ribble in the sale for £50 so I have one in stock when it needs changing again.

I have a 2010 Secteur Comp(bought in June 2011) and I am still on the first chain after cycling 4000km.

These parts are consumable and will wear out. If you change the chain when it wears beyond a certain point (tools available to measure it) then your cassette will last longer.

You should definitely change the chain and almost certainly the cassette, if the LBS is indeed trustworthy.

If you don't do this, your chain will start slipping under load (never fun) and you will also start to excessively wear the chainrings (front gears) which will add further expense

Reminded me to buy a new chain from Ribble as I am sure it will to be replaced soon.
