20 mile ride - Not bad for a 6 year old!

Had a very pleasant ride today with the family and a few cycling friends.

We had two routes planed, a short one of 6 miles, and a "long" route of 12 miles... (Or so we thought). My 6 year old son has only been riding for a couple of months, but he's quite keen, and insisted on doing the 12 mile ride.

However, it turned out the 12 mile ride was actually a 20 mile ride, which I wouldn't have expected him to do if I'd known in advance. As it happened, he managed it fine, virtually without stopping. Pretty much all on quite roads, but he was well behaved and his road sense was pretty good. I'm very proud of the little chap!

And I should probably mention his Mum too, who hadn't cycled 20 miles until today.

Even I deserve a little praise I think! - I was towing a trailer with child #2, and riding fixed gear.

All in all, a very successful and pleasant day!

That's great news. I also have a 6yr old although he's of very small stature and still on a 16", who loves it and has cycled those miles like your on. I love to see such little one's out riding, hope he keeps it up!

My 7 year old grandson rides up to 20 miles or so, but we take him on cycle paths wherever possible and try to keep him off the roads. Not sure about taking him on the canal towpath either!

Well done to all mentioned in the OP. About 10 years ago, when he was 8, my lad did 23 miles on the roads. We did stop for an ice cream though. He got some badge or other from Cubs for the effort. This summer we were doing Swiss alpine climbs together. Sweet.
