Ok troops, today was the big day. Banana and some chocolate in my pocket and a bottle full of water and away I went. The weather was good, if a bit on the breezy side, but pleasant none the less. Once on the outskirts of the village I realised how windy it actually was. I've never felt frustration like it...... ever!! Pedalling and pedalling and, well you get the picture. It has to be said at this point that there was a few hills tackled on foot too but when I got home I felt absolutely great. I think the route was about 10 miles, no trip computer yet so relying on local road knowledge. I really enjoyed the experience and can't wait to get back out once my arse recovers. The mtb tyres have to go tho. Reckon I've caught the bug.

If you have a smart phone there loads of different apps you can download to track your mileage :okay:

Good on you, I'm new too and did my first big ride today (47 miles) and the last 7 were into a headwind so I feel your pain

Yeah, conditions were not friendly today. I rode 5 miles into town mostly into a headwind, went to a meeting and a shop, then rode the exact reverse route mostly into a headwind! A true "againsterly" day  Oh well, at least some of the route was pretty

Shot, Over!!
How much of a drama is it to change to rigid forks from susp forks. On my ride out yesterday when I had to get up out of the seat, I just bounced on the suspension and felt I was wasting a great amount of energy on keeping myself and the bike stable and also the forks just soaked up my efforts. Any thoughts?... as I'm beginning to think I should've shelled out more for a more suitable machine.

Can you lock the forks or at least set them so hard they don't bounce so much?

I'm sure the suspension haters will be along shortly... I don't have it and have only ridden it once that I remember, but IIRC my tyres are 1x30, 3x37s, 2x40s, 2x50s... so there's a lot of air doing enough of a job for me on roads.
