Growing Old is Compulsory...Growing Up is Optional
My first project (Sally the Raleigh) has spawned a second in the form of this Dawes Imperial I bought off ebay as a donor bike. It's a 1984 model and the previous owners bought it in 1988, as you can see from the pics it's seen some life and is badly in need of a bit of TLC.

It had been crashed and had bent forks/crown/steerer. Nothing that Dave Yates can't fix though, and it is currently with him getting a refurb.

Some parts had been replaced and some were original, some were u/s & went straight into the skip, others are ok and in my parts bin awaiting a clean up before i sell them.

The re-build will be a mixture of old and new. A full Shimano 600EX 6207/8 series groupset (mainly NOS) for the drivetrain and controls. A pair of Mavic MA2 rims laced to the 600 hubs, with a 600EX Uniglide cassette. Bars are new Nitto Neat, Stem Nitto Technomic, Seatpost Nitto S65, both also new, Saddle, San Marco Vintage Regal. Tyres, Michelin Dynamic Classic 700x20. Finishing Kit in white and polished alloy.

The shiny stuff has been steadily drifting in over the last couple of weeks, some polishing of Crankset and Rear Derailleur to do and a few small bits left to source, chain, bottle cages, bar tape etc. Then i'm ready for the build as soon as the frame is back from Dave Yates.

I've asked for a few alterations to the frame whilst the work is being done. Shifter lever Bosses, Front Derailleur Hanger, Seat Tube Bottle Bosses and the removal of the mudguard eyes. Then the re-spray and new livery. Really looking forward to having it built ready to ride in the Spring/Early Summer.

is it a steel lugged frame? or alli? if steel then congrats if alli then just a tiny bit smaller congrats (excuse the steelie fanboy coming out here!) am a great fan of lugs my self although not got them and never had them  not so much the fancy ones though. a nice bike all the same, now you need to add it to your signature! if you don't mind me asking how much was it off ebay? looks nice and solid with no visible rust, you repainting it or leaving it? but just make sure to replace that chain it is horible in the pics!
Cheers Ed

Full steel 531 frame of an 84 vintage so 30yrs old this year.
Bought it crash damaged as a donor bike, paid £56, the wheels were worth that alone, guess i got lucky that the bent fork crown is repairable, so getting a second classic bike out of this project.
Some rust on the inside of the forks and under the BB shell, but nothing serious, going for a full stove enamel re-spray, should be good for another 30 yrs then^_^

There's something deeply satisfying in polishing components for a restoration project

is the frame going to be the maroon type colour in the OP?
Cheers Ed

That was the intention Ed, but my framebuilder uses the traditional stove enamel paint and would have been too expensive to buy in for 1 job, so i opted for gloss black. Would have been nice to keep the original colour but would have added £100-£150 onto the bill!

Yer, am using the 600 Crankset with a period correct Shimano cup & cone bb (bearing races tho, not loose), means a strip out and service each year, but i enjoy that side of cycling as much as riding.
