Been trying to get my OH's 1982 Peugeot Tourer on the road again. Don't know precise model but it's a Ladies frame in Carbolite 103 and with clearance for mudguards, pannier rack etc. .

It was originally fitted with Huret/Simplex gears and has downtube braze on fittings for the levers. Original Simplex levers are damaged and as I'm not trying for a restoration I've replaced then with SunTour items originally fitted to my similarly aged Dawes. The changer is a late model Suntour substituted for the Simplex years ago for greater capacity (ie a sub 30 inch granny gear for hill climbing).

My problem is the changer friction bolts which appear to be same size as the Dawes but have a different thread pitch. I have the original items but they insert into a fragile plastic head and I would really like to find a more robust replacement.

Does anybody (a) know the thread size/pitch and (b) a likely source of spares.

Thank in advance for any replies.

I'd have thought the threads would have been the same... a bit worrying as I ride a Peugeot Carbolite frame with braze-on downtube shifters and I'd always thought any other braze-on shifter would go on fine if I wanted to replace mine.

Are you looking for spare parts for your Suntour shifters or would just replacing the entire shifters be an easier option? Mine are Sachs-Huret shifters so presumably any from at least that manufacturer would fit the braze ons. Another option may be to get a band-on set of shifters and mount them next to the braze-ons on the frame.

The Sun Tour shifters replace ther damaged Simplex items. They fit the braze on externally but the threads on the bolts that tighten to provide the friction are different. What I need is details of the thread size/pitch or a source of Simplex compatible bolts. Full sets of simplex levers turn up on E-bay from time to time but I'm reluctant to pay the prices thay command when I'm not doing an authentic restoration.

I used to ride a 1983-ish carbolite frame from which I took off the shifters when I went fixed--I may still have them in a bag, so I'll check when I get home (remind me via PM if I'm not in touch later this evening).

Might it be possible to retap a new set of threads into the braze-ons to match the Suntours (if your OH is married to having downtube shifters), or is it possibly time to change over to bar-mounted shifters of some description and save yourself further hassle?

Threads on French bikes are different from anything else. Check out mytenspeeds.com you will find a lot of info there about restoring them.

I replaced the Sachs Huret downtube shifters on my (1987) carbolite Peugeot and the ones I put on were standard Shimano items with M5 x 0.8 threaded bolts which fitted fine, so at least by 1987 Peugeot were using 'standard' threads.
I think you'll find though that prior to the mid 80s Peugeot were pretty much a law unto themselves when it came to thread sizes, so don't expect anything on the older ones to be 'standard'
