This is my 1980 King of Mercia. The frame was an 18th birthday present and the bike was still in use until I decided to move with my family to Australia in 2006. Wanting to keep the frame for sentimental reasons and having other bikes that I was going to bring with me, I stripped it down and sold all the components off at car boot sales.
Recently I decided I needed a wet weather bike so having this old frame hanging in the shed, I began hunting for second hand parts to get it on the road as cheaply as possible. That was when I discovered second hand rubbish had become collectable an older quality components cost more than new ones, so my cheap winter bike ended up not being so cheap and is now made up from a mixture of old and new components.

That looks fantastic. I love a retro bike.

Very nice. Coming from Derbyshire, my first racing bikes were Mercians. Anyone on here remember the shop on London Road?
Nice to know there's one being ridden in Aus.

Very classy! Those tyres go with the paint a treat.

However I would, very respectfully and aware that it's practical, suggest that the tail pack is like a pimple on the face of Venus.

What rear derailleur is that? Shimano Altus? Mine on the Dawes could probably do with replacing, and I've been looking at that model.

If so, did it just screw onto the hanger as you'd expect?

Very nice bike, by the way. Love the colour scheme!

Thank's for the compliments. I do agree that the pack under the saddle spoils the look a bit, as do the two rear lights, but the bike is for riding in bad weather and having my back pockets full of tools, waterproofs etc can get a bit uncomfortable.
The rear derailleur is a Shimano Alivio, fitted temporarily until I can find a long arm Campagnolo one at a reasonable price.

Had no problem fitting the derailleur and is working ok.
