I need to replace the old type bottom bracket for a new cartridge type. My Galaxy has the old spindle and bearing cup type with a spindle that measures 14cm including the threads (12cm not including). I know it is standard British 68, how do I know what length of BB to choose? The cranks say Custom on them (double chainset 40/52 with 170mm length cranks). Any ideas?

I get Sheldon here but I'm still confused. The spindle length is 113mm as stated. Does that mean I just buy a 68/113 cartridge type? Sorry I'm a bit thick when it comes to these things

The 68 is the width of the bb shell - your Gal is definitely 68mm. The bigger number is the axle length and is determined by the type of chainset used. If the old one was a 113 (presuming it was the right one fitted in the first place) thats what you should replace it with.

The two statements can't both be applicable for the existing chainset obviously. Looking up Sheldon's BB table is not as reliable as reading what is stamped/printed on the BB or measuring the spindle.
