Cycling home, I changed down into the lower front ring but when I came to change back up again the lever wouldn't move far enough. Got the bike home, released the cable as I assumed it was too tight but the lever still won't click. Any ideas? Is this something I can fix myself?

Bad luck, Martin.

I don't think STIs are very user serviceable. First thing to do though is to give it a good flush out with WD40. That may free up whatever is stuck.

Sometimes my one on my old bike doesn't register the upshift click so doesn't have a downshift click to get me onto the small ring. Then I just re-upshift which always seems to reset it. Your problem sounds different though.

Thanks Frank. I think it is different unfortunately. I took off what bits I could but couldn't see anything I could obviously remedy. Took it to LBS, he seems confident he can sort it though and will ring me tomorrow. He even said he's sort the click out that's been driving me nuts!

Bad luck Martin,

If it;s any consolation I think the new 105 (5700 series) are a lot better than past models. I hope they last a long time!

Hmmm. I had the same thing on my 'cross bike. I never did get to the bottom of it. I took off the mech, the large chainring and bolted on a chainguide and gave up with it altogether. It's still on there, as a somewhat expensive, but matching, brake lever.

Do you have to buy them by the pair then? if that's the case I'll stick with this setup until I break the right hand one too.

It has happened to me too and is a known problem with the LH 105 shifter - you should be able to get it replaced under warranty

OUCH - I guess it's too late to mention that you can buy a single lever.
