Hello all,

I newish to road cycling and my first bike Giant defy 1. Has a 105 group set? I am after some advice on what chain lube to use and at what time off the year I should be using it(Dry,Wet ect). Are owners just using one lube all year round or changing though the year.
The bike will only be used on the road and I am a fan of the wipe, lube and wipe application method.

Thanks all.
Kind regards

I use Finish Line. One lube is pretty much the same as another and any difference to chain life between brands will be measured in yards rather than miles.

Can't see that chain oil would be very good.
Really? If it's good enough for chainsaw chains then it's more than good enough for a simple bicycle chain.

What made you try that then?

Just got fed up of buying small bottles of overpriced generic lube packaged to suggest it's specifically been designed for bicycle chains.

FWIW I use KMC X10 chains on my CAAD10 with Dura-Ace mechs and I've been using chainsaw oil for yonks now with no problems at all, plus the fact that a 1 litre bottle is going to last for years and years v's a small bottle of 'cycle specific' chain lube, all makes for superb VFM IME.

Makes sense.

I'm assuming it doesn't fly everywhere if it's meant for a chainsaw?

Not at all. I use a plastic syringe and just put a drop on each roller. I usually lube it before putting the bike away and I leave an old cloth on the floor under the chain, TBH I've always done this anyway, even with cycle lubes, then before the next ride I wipe off any excess and waddya know, good as new

Another mickle fan here, though I use whatever oil comes to hand, at present Volvo spec Castrol. Applied the same way a @smokeysmoo I enjoy a nice whisper from my rear end on every ride:smile:

I was originally thinking that it wouldn't stick to the chain or protect the chain for any length of time, as in it would be to heavy and absorb more dirt. But it sounds like you have been using it for a while, ill give it a go much rather find an alternative to expensive cycle lube. TBH

Chainsaw Chain oil is designed to be a non-fling type of oil in fact it goes stringy if too much is applied/when leaving the oil can and is less smelly than the Hypoid 90 axle oil I used previously. Little and often and Mickle (although I did that before he "patented" it)
