So, the deed is done. After a brief, unsuccessful flirtation with hybrids, I have sealed the deal and join the ranks of the roadie crew...

After much deliberation, hours and hours on ebay and internet sites, haggling and domestic negotiation with the erm, ministry of finance I have bought a road bike. In the end after trial and error and just getting a feel for the bike and what felt best, I went for the Raleigh Airlite 400, 2010 model. It has shimano 105 groupset, carbon forks, and more importantly - I got one hell of a discount from the LBS (plus freebies) which blew the other contenders out of the water.

Now all that remains is too sell my other 2 bikes to clear room in the garage for the new steed. I take delivery tomorrow.

Phew! What a day - adrenalin is still coursing through my veins!

This will be the end of my cycling purchasing right??

I cannot wait to go out and simply rack up miles and miles and miles....

Enjoy your new bike ;)

N+1 .... the number of bikes you need = the number you have +1 , i am physically restrained from bike shops so i do not buy another one ( i am allowed 2, a main and winter/back up )

Then you have lights, clothing ,replacement parts like brake pads and chains etc etc etc etc etc ............................

I just tell Mrs CK i save £700 a year in petrol easily after i have spent some money and she gets the car all week

Odd innit? So much of what we do is aimed at identity. To be seen as a 'roadie', or a mountain biker, a cyclist, or whatever... it's so important to us somehow isn't it? I wonder why? Not having a go 007, I'm as guilty as the next person.

This will be the end of my cycling purchasing right??

Of course it is, of course....

You've answered your own question my friend.... "my other 2 bikes". It never ends. You're locked into n+1 until that identity issue is resolved!

The strange things about accessories is that they all cost £20-30 which seems reasonable but adds up.

Decent Lock
Reasonable lights
Helmet
Mud guards
Road bike pump
Cycling shorts
New Pedals
SPD shoes

Excellent, well done!

I was in France last week and I caught the names on two road bikes of the ones I saw - both were Raleigh, don't know why but I was quite surprised. So you're in good company and I think Raleigh are making some decent bikes at the moment.

And as for the end of cycling related purchases, again hahahahahahahahaha!

Raleigh seem to be coming back in a big way. The difference in spec between 2009 & 2010 is night & day. Then again in 6 months I will be looking to get shot of it to upgrade to something else no doubt haha.

I will report back often, and in laborious, often quite tedious detail on my experiences with the new, latest machine.

In not too long you will be demoting this bike to second bike / commuter / winter bike and needing a new carbon model. You have entered a vicious circle of expenditure. But, welcome.
