Hi All

I have what is probably a silly question regarding changing to 11 speed.

I currently have Shimano Tiagra 4600 on a Genesis Croix de Fer. For no reason other aesthetics I would like to replace the shifters with ones with hidden gear cables.

The most straightforward way to do this would be to get some 105 5700 shifters, however I have read mixed reviews in terms of their performance.

11 speed 105 (5800) is apparently much better. I have one set of wheels which are 11 speed compatible, however the original wheels are not. The hubs are Shimano M525A. Finally on to my question! Is it possible to replace the freehub with one that is 11 speed so that I don't have to rebuild the wheel with a new hub? I suspect it is not possible, but worth asking the question.

Many thanks

Dave

As above,.lot of expense for little benefit and some downsides of going 11 speed. 2nd hand ultegra shifters is your best route, you might pick up some matching brakes too...

Thanks.

I agree that this is all unnecessary, but when did that matter when it comes to spending money on bikes!

I had considered 10 speed Ultegra shifters. They are however much more expensive, and I would see it as 'investing' in old technology. I have also read a few reviews that reckon the difference in the shifters between them and 10 speed 105 is mainly cosmetic. Hence the desire to go 11 speed 105, especially as I already have one compatible wheel. If there was a way of making the other wheel compatible, that would make up my mind.

Thanks again.

If it's any help I have used the 11sp 105 and it is a brilliant groupo.
Super crisp shifting, the front mech is very light going from small to big ring.

The 5700/6700 etc shifters are always really draggy on cables due to the way they are routed. Thus has been sorted on the 11 spd 5800/6800 etc

Ultegra 10 speed shifts beautifully, I have both that and Ultegra 11spd, very little difference, both ace, the 11 SPD front D trim is a bit neater if anything.

Unfortunately, Shimano 10s wheels/hubs need new wheels/hubs for 11 speed. Most other manufacturer's 8-10 speed hubs accept 11 speed easily - e.g. Mavic.

Stick with 10 and get Ultegra 10 speed, using the same logic as when does it matter spending a little more ? It's a lot less hassle. You also have a different cable pull ratio, so the mech will need changing.

Oh and just check the price of 11 speed cassettes !

The new Tiagra is ergonomically ( I believe) the same as the 5800 and 10sp (not to mention in a triple flavour too), would only need to change the brifters.

Edco do an 11-speed cassette that fits on 10-speed hubs. It's expensive but probably cheaper than new wheels.

I like the look of that 12-27 11sp, but not sure the purpose of the 12-29 that 27-29 change is really odd.

Its the same range (12-27) I have now but with that 18th in there. Shame they don't do a triple front yet for the 11sp, now what was I saying about ergonomics on the Tiagra .............

Yeah, I have the old 10spd 105 on my road bike and I've used the new Tiagra, and to all intents and purposes there is no difference. In fact, the new Tiagra is perhaps better than the old 105.
