I have not had much luck in any of my LBS, so I went to Halfords today to buy a pannier rack. They had a few different kinds, so I went and picked up one that I thought would fit my Carrera TDF. At the till I asked if this would be ok for my bike and they said no as the bike does not have the eyelets by the brakes. I was sure my bike had them, but I took their advice and picked up a rack that attaches to the seat. This is the one. http://www.halfords.com/cycling/accessories/panniers-racks/bikehut-alloy-beam-pannier-rack

I got home and mounted it to the bike and it seems a bit high (and a bit stupid), but this can't be avoided. The thing I worry about is wobble but the rack appears to have an area to side a support rail in but the rack came with no support rails.

What should I do in this case and is it worth returning the rack and getting one that fits into the eyelets that are on my bike?

you also need eyelets around the qr skewer for a standard rack..

..a long way from somewhere called Home..
usual Halfords rubbish incorrect advice
as in pic#2 - you have eyelets on the stay
in pic#3 there is one on the drop out i think..?

take it back...dont take NO for an answer
if you want to carry a medium or large bag like this....

you want one to attach to the top stay eyelets AND down by the rear axle
as this...

Looks like it is meant to function as a simple beam rack as well as a supported rack

The supports at the bottom, if used, would enable it to carry more weight.

My bad, there are eyelets near the QR skewer, which on the gear side looks very close to the smallest gear so I shall have to grind a bolt to size.

That's the kind I had in mind. I may bring the bike with me so there is no way they can turn around and say otherwise.

That makes sense.

Thanks for the help

Looking at your photos it appears you have eyelets on the dropouts and on the seat stay to mount a pannier rack. Take your beam rack back and swap it for a proper one, making it plain you bought the wrong one on their wrong advice.
Will do, thanks

Or a couple of washers.

Re Halfords-I recently bought 2 items which weren't suitable and it was my fault. I worried a bit about how to get Halfords to take them back-I needn't have !! The guy I saw just said it was ok as they had a no quibble returns policy.

Great  I was a little worried they may turn around and say no, but if you have had success I shall try tomorrow.

Unless I head down to Halfords now, I will not be able to do anything until sunday. The main reason I want a pannier rack is so I have somewhere to put my bike lock. I have tried everyway possible and have yet to find a solution (other than removing my bottle holder.
