The first police Special Constable was John Constable, the artist, who's most famous works include The "Haywain", "Wivenhoe Park", and "My Panda Car in front of the Police Station".
Constable gained favour with his Chief Inspector by sketching humorous caricatures of other senior officers, and as a tribute the basic rank in the force was renamed "Constable". The previous term, "Common or garden plod" is no longer used.
