I've bought this second hand Dawes Ultra road bike. Is it any good?

Having Googled, the only Dawes Ultra i've found is the Ultra Galaxy. Have i bought a Galaxy? Are they good bikes? Etc etc...

Yep, it's an Ultra not an Ultra Galaxy (i.e., racing rather than touring bike).

Can't tell you much just now re spec (my interest in spec is vague as i'm just a casual 20-30 mile once or twice a week in summer type, and the bike is at LBS now for repair). It needs a tyre and a few tweaks. I was disappointed to only get the price down to £70. I hope my total outlay to have it road ready will not exceed £100. I kind of feel daft shelling out a ton on an old-ish bike, and i had very nearly persuaded myself to get a brand new Triban 3. At least i can spend the £200 i have saved on pop and crisps.

Yeah, true. Sometimes you just dive in and trust your gut feeling. Oh, and the frame looked pretty straight and sound.
Very likely collect from LBS tmro, so maybe i'll be able to tell you about the tubing, Cycleops.

I'm gonna have it converted to flat bar. A road bike with straight handlebars is the coolest thing in the world. My reasons are other than aesthetic.
