We've only recently started to get the "Microsoft" computer scammers again, after investing a while back in a phone that doesn't let withheld numbers through. They must be getting a lot of problems with this strategy as they have now started using bogus Caller IDs that most phones will let through.
Anyway, I had the usual conversation, this time with an "Amanda", during which I acted dumb and played along with her for a while. After 20 minutes I said to her that I thought I'd kept her occupied for long enough. She misunderstood and thought I was feeling guilty for being so slow, until I explained to her that I was feeling a warm glow for having prevented her from scamming any other vulnerable victims while she was speaking to me.
Usually, when challenged, you either get a lot of bluff/bluster or they simply hang up. But amazingly, she said to me that she didn't care that her organisation wasn't going to get any money from me because she had plenty of colleagues on the other lines, busy scamming other people (her words).
I'm ashamed to say at that point I told her to go forth and multiply, before hanging up on her, but I'm regretting now having missed the opportunity to have what could have been a fascinating conversation on ethics with someone who clearly felt no shame in admitting that she knew exactly what she was involved in.
